About Compound Words
What this skill is
A compound word is formed when two individual words are joined together to create a brand-new word with its own meaning (such as pan + cake = pancake or sun + flower = sunflower).
When children learn it
Identifying and forming compound words begins in 1st grade and is practiced across 2nd and 3rd grade vocabulary units (CCSS 2.L.4.d).
Teaching Tips
- Play word puzzle games: write 'butter' and 'fly' on separate index cards. When placed side by side, they make 'butterfly'! Point out how each smaller word is a real word on its own.
Common Mistakes
- Splitting compound words incorrectly or confusing syllables with base words.
- Adding a hyphen where standard English uses a closed compound word.
- Confusing compound words with blends or prefixes.
