What this skill is
Root words (and Greek/Latin roots) are primary word units that carry core meaning and cannot be broken down further. Affixes attach to roots to build complete words (e.g., root 'struct' [build] forms construct, structure, destruction). Studying classical roots decodes the meanings of thousands of advanced academic words across science, social studies, literature, history, etymology, root analysis, word origin study, classical language roots, and content textbooks.
When children learn it
Base standalone root words are taught in 2nd and 3rd grade. Greek and Latin bound roots (vis, aud, struct, bio, auto, tele, port, ped) are detailed across 4th grade and 5th grade vocabulary and reading curricula, social studies units, content reading, research projects, and etymology workshops.
