About Spelling Prefixes
What this skill is
Spelling prefixes explores how prefixes attach to base words without dropping root letters, and how Latin prefixes change their final consonant to match the root sound.
When children learn it
Taught in 3rd through 5th grade morphology and spelling conventions (CCSS L.3.2f, L.4.2d).
Teaching Tips
- Keep both letters: prefix + base word (mis + spell = misspell). Notice how the prefix sounds change before p, m, or l.
Common Mistakes
- Dropping a letter when the prefix ends with the same letter the base begins with (writing mispell instead of misspell).
- Using in- instead of im- before p, b, or m (writing inpossible).
