About Plural Spelling

What this skill is

Plural spelling applies systematic orthographic rules to form noun plurals: adding -es after s, x, z, ch, sh; changing y to -ies; and memorizing irregular forms like wolf/wolves and child/children.

When children learn it

Regular plurals begin in 1st grade, with -es and -ies rules and irregular plural spellings taught in 2nd and 3rd grade (CCSS 2.L.1.b, 3.L.1.b).

Teaching Tips

  • Teach the "Vowel Neighbor Rule" for words ending in Y: if a vowel sits right next to the y (like in "boy" or "key"), just add S! If a consonant is before the y (like in "baby" or "city"), change y to I-E-S.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding an apostrophe before the s (writing "cat's" instead of "cats").
  • Adding -s to words ending in hissing sounds instead of -es ("dishs" instead of "dishes").
  • Changing y to -ies when a vowel comes before the y (writing "monkies" instead of "monkeys").
