About Homophones

What this skill is

Homophones are words that share identical phonological pronunciation but have different etymologies, meanings, and spellings (such as knight and night, or blue and blew).

When children learn it

Recognizing and spelling homophones correctly begins in 2nd grade and is reinforced through 5th grade writing conventions.

Teaching Tips

  • Draw the meaning inside the spelling letters: in "PEAR", draw a green pear fruit inside the letter P. In "PAIR", draw two shoes on the letter P. Connecting visual drawings to spelling fixes homophone recall.

Common Mistakes

  • Spelling words phonetically based on sound rather than meaning.
  • Selecting the wrong homophone in fill-in-the-blank sentences.
  • Confusing homophones (sound alike) with homographs (look alike).
