About Sensory Details
What this skill is
Sensory writing incorporates sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch details to immerse the reader directly in the setting and action of the text.
When children learn it
Using concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences is taught in 2nd through 5th grade (CCSS 3.W.3.b, 4.W.3.d, 5.W.3.d).
Teaching Tips
- Draw a hand on paper and label the 5 fingers: Sight, Sound, Smell, Taste, Touch. Before finishing a writing page, have your child make sure at least three different senses are represented in their story.
Common Mistakes
- Focusing 100% on visual sight details and completely ignoring sound, smell, and touch.
- Piling too many sensory adjectives into one sentence without commas.
- Telling instead of showing (writing "I was scared" instead of "My palms were sweaty and my heart hammered").
