About Explanatory Paragraphs

What this skill is

An explanatory paragraph develops a single central factual concept using a clear topic sentence, 3 to 4 related supporting evidence details, and a summarizing conclusion sentence.

When children learn it

Structuring complete explanatory paragraphs begins in 2nd grade and serves as the foundation for 3rd through 5th grade essays.

Teaching Tips

  • Use the "Hamburger Paragraph" model: the top bun is the topic sentence; the lettuce, tomato, and patty are supporting facts; and the bottom bun is the conclusion sentence. A burger needs all its layers to be complete!

Common Mistakes

  • Including irrelevant random facts that do not relate to the topic sentence.
  • Writing only one or two sentences and calling it a paragraph.
  • Omitting a concluding wrap-up sentence.
