About Strong Endings

What this skill is

A strong ending provides emotional closure and resolution, tying up loose plot threads, showing how characters changed, or reflecting on lasting memories rather than stopping abruptly.

When children learn it

Providing a sense of closure in narrative writing is explicitly taught in 2nd grade and refined through 5th grade (CCSS 2.W.3, 3.W.3.d, 5.W.3.e).

Teaching Tips

  • Try the "Feeling or Lesson" ending: have your character reflect on how they felt, what they learned, or what they will remember about that day. A reflective final sentence leaves the reader satisfied.

Common Mistakes

  • Using cliché abrupt endings like "The End", "And then they died", or "It was all a dream".
  • Stopping mid-action when the page runs out of lines.
  • Introducing a completely new problem in the final sentence.
