About Opinion Essay Structure

What this skill is

The OREO method structures opinion essays: Opinion (state your stance), Reason (explain why), Evidence (give examples/facts), and Opinion restated (conclude strongly).

When children learn it

Writing opinion pieces on topics or texts supporting a point of view with reasons and information is taught in 3rd through 5th grade (CCSS 3.W.1, 4.W.1, 5.W.1).

Teaching Tips

  • Draw a double-stuffed OREO cookie: top cookie is Opinion, cream layers are Reasons and Examples, and bottom cookie is Opinion restated. Make sure all layers are present before writing the final draft.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting the Evidence layer of the OREO cookie and only giving personal feelings.
  • Writing body paragraphs without topic sentences.
  • Dropping the final conclusion paragraph.
