About Haiku and Cinquain
What this skill is
A haiku is a traditional Japanese three-line nature poem with a strict 5-7-5 syllable pattern. A cinquain is a five-line poem following a 2-4-6-8-2 syllable structure or parts-of-speech progression.
When children learn it
Taught in 3rd through 5th grade poetry units to develop syllable awareness and economical word choice.
Teaching Tips
- Use the "Chin Drop Test" for counting syllables: place your hand under your chin while saying a word. Every time your jaw drops down and touches your hand, count one syllable! It makes syllable counting concrete.
Common Mistakes
- Counting words instead of counting syllables on fingers.
- Forgetting the 5-7-5 line structure of traditional haiku.
- Thinking haiku lines must rhyme (traditional haiku do not rhyme).
