About Letters and Notes
What this skill is
Letter writing teaches the five standard letter parts: heading (date), greeting (salutation), body, closing, and signature, combined with polite social communication conventions.
When children learn it
Writing friendly letters and notes begins in 1st and 2nd grade (CCSS L.2.2.b) and continues through 5th grade formal correspondence.
Teaching Tips
- Write a real thank-you note or postcard after birthdays or holidays. Have your child point out the five parts (Head, Greeting, Body, Closing, Signature) like touching their own head, shoulders, knees, and toes!
Common Mistakes
- Omitting the comma after the greeting or closing (writing "Dear Grandma" with no comma).
- Forgetting the date at the top right of the page.
- Writing one long block of text without indentation.
