About News Articles

What this skill is

Journalistic writing uses the inverted pyramid structure, placing the most important facts (Who, What, Where, When, Why) in the opening lead, followed by supporting details, quotes, and objective facts.

When children learn it

Taught in 4th and 5th grade expository writing and media literacy units.

Teaching Tips

  • Ask the 5 Ws: Who, What, Where, When, and Why. Have your child write all 5 answers in their very first paragraph. Once the 5 Ws are in place, adding quotes and extra details is easy.

Common Mistakes

  • Injecting personal opinions into objective news reporting.
  • Burying the lead by putting the main event at the very end of the article.
  • Writing weak headlines that fail to summarize the main event.
