About Audience and Purpose
What this skill is
Audience (who is reading) and purpose (why you are writing: to entertain, inform, or persuade) dictate the voice, vocabulary level, formal tone, and organization of any written piece.
When children learn it
Producing writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience is a 4th and 5th grade standard (CCSS 4.W.4, 5.W.4).
Teaching Tips
- Ask: "Who are you talking to?". Remind your child they speak differently to a toddler, their best friend, and their school principal. Writing tone changes in the exact same way depending on the audience.
Common Mistakes
- Using casual slang or texting abbreviations in formal academic reports or letters to principals.
- Writing in a flat, dry textbook voice when trying to entertain friends with a spooky story.
- Not knowing who the intended reader is before writing.
