About Topic Sentences
What this skill is
A topic sentence is the main guiding sentence of a paragraph, clearly stating the central focus and preparing the reader for the supporting details that follow.
When children learn it
Crafting topic sentences begins in 2nd grade and is refined as an anchor organizational skill through 5th grade expository writing.
Teaching Tips
- Think of an umbrella: the topic sentence is the wide umbrella that covers all the other sentences in the paragraph. If a detail does not fit under the umbrella, it belongs in a different paragraph.
Common Mistakes
- Writing topic sentences that are too broad ("Dogs are cool") or too narrow ("My dog is named Max").
- Starting body paragraphs with supporting details instead of an overarching topic statement.
- Announcing the writing clumsily ("In this paragraph I will tell you about...").
