Printable Imagination Drawing Worksheets
These imagination drawing worksheets give a kindergartner or 1st grader one simple shape, like two circles or a zigzag, under a title such as It's Not a Ball! Your child turns the shape into something new, then writes what it is on the line at the bottom.

About Imagination Drawing
What this skill is
Each page is an open drawing prompt in the spirit of the picture books where a box is never just a box. Starting from a shape takes away the worry of a blank page, and drawing around it builds pencil control. The It's a ____ line adds a small writing task with a word your child chose.
When children learn it
Drawing a picture and labeling it is how kindergartners start to write. Common Core asks them to use drawing, dictating and writing to name and tell about a topic (W.K.2). In 1st grade the label can grow into a full sentence about the drawing.
Teaching Tips
- Before your child draws, take turns naming things the shape could be. A circle could be a sun, a cookie or a face.
- Accept every idea. There is no wrong answer, and an odd idea is a good one.
- Help with the word on the line by stretching out its sounds, like s-u-n. Spelling it the way it sounds is fine in kindergarten.
Common Mistakes
- Drawing the thing the title says it is not, like a ball for the circle. That is a fine first try. Ask what else is round.
- Drawing a small picture beside the shape instead of making the shape part of the picture.
- Leaving the line blank because the word feels too hard to spell.
