About Picture Mazes

What this skill is

A maze asks a child to find one path from start to finish without crossing a wall. That takes two things at once: steady pencil control to stay between the lines, and looking ahead to see where a path ends before going down it.

When children learn it

Simple picture mazes are a preschool and kindergarten activity. Common Core doesn't list mazes as a standard. The easy level here is a 4 by 4 grid and the hardest is 6 by 6, with more turns and dead ends.

Teaching Tips

  • Ask your child to trace the path with a finger first. If the finger hits a dead end, it can back up with nothing to erase.
  • Start with the easy level and move up once your child finishes a maze without crossing a wall.

Common Mistakes

  • Drawing into a dead end and then cutting straight through a wall to get out.
  • Racing ahead without looking where the path goes, then having to scribble out a wrong turn.
  • Letting the pencil line run over the walls on tight corners.
