About Adverbs and the Verbs They Describe
What this skill is
Adverbs describe verbs by telling how, when, where, or why the action happens. Recognizing the direct connection between a specific adverb and its verb is central to sentence diagramming and comprehension.
When children learn it
Connecting adverbs directly to verbs is introduced in 2nd and 3rd grade and practiced with complex sentence structures in 4th and 5th grade.
Teaching Tips
- Have your child circle the adverb and draw an arrow directly to the verb it tells about. Ask them: "Does this word tell HOW he ran, or WHERE he ran?". Connecting the two words with an arrow makes the grammar visible and concrete.
Common Mistakes
- Connecting the adverb to a nearby noun instead of the action verb performing the motion.
- Missing the connection when an adverb appears at the very beginning of a sentence before the subject.
- Struggling when multiple verbs appear in a compound predicate with only one verb being modified.
