About Subordinating Conjunctions

What this skill is

A subordinating conjunction connects an independent clause to a dependent clause, establishing relationships of time, cause, contrast, or condition (such as because, although, since, unless, and while).

When children learn it

Subordinating conjunctions and complex sentence construction are taught in 3rd grade (CCSS L.3.1.h) and refined through 4th and 5th grade essay writing and editing.

Teaching Tips

  • Teach the "Front Comma Rule": if the connecting word starts the sentence ("Although it was cold, we went outside"), your voice pauses and needs a comma. If the connecting word sits in the middle ("We went outside although it was cold"), usually no comma is needed.

Common Mistakes

  • Creating sentence fragments by leaving a subordinating clause standing alone (such as writing "Because it was raining." as a full sentence).
  • Placing an unnecessary comma before the subordinating conjunction when the dependent clause appears at the end of the sentence.
  • Forgetting the required comma when the subordinating conjunction starts the sentence.
