About Determiners and Quantifiers
What this skill is
Determiners and quantifiers are words placed before nouns to specify quantity, definiteness, or proximity, indicating whether a noun refers to a specific group, a general amount, or a countable quantity.
When children learn it
Demonstrative determiners (this, that, these, those) are introduced in 1st and 2nd grade. Quantifiers for countable vs. uncountable nouns (much vs. many, few vs. less) are refined in 3rd and 4th grade.
Teaching Tips
- Teach the counting test: ask your child "Can you count them one by one?". If yes (like apples or pencils), use "many" or "fewer". If it is a mass you cannot count individually (like water or time), use "much" or "less". Test this rule on worksheet questions together.
Common Mistakes
- Using "much" with countable plural nouns (saying "much cookies" instead of "many cookies").
- Confusing singular and plural demonstratives, saying "this books" instead of "these books".
- Using "less" instead of "fewer" when referring to countable individual items.
