About Prepositions

What this skill is

A preposition is a relationship word that connects a noun or pronoun to other words in the sentence, showing location in space (above, behind), time (before, after), or direction (toward, into).

When children learn it

Spatial prepositions are introduced in kindergarten and 1st grade through physical movement and storybooks. Identifying prepositions in written text is taught in 2nd grade and practiced extensively in 3rd grade.

Teaching Tips

  • Use the "Squirrel and the Tree" trick: ask your child if a squirrel can do it to a tree (run UP a tree, sleep IN a tree, jump OVER a tree, hide UNDER a tree). If it fits the tree test, it is almost always a preposition. Try it on tricky worksheet words.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing prepositions with adverbs when words like "up" or "down" appear without an object following them.
  • Overlooking prepositions of time (such as "during", "since", or "until") while only spotting physical location words.
  • Circling the noun that follows the preposition instead of isolating the preposition itself.
