About Prepositions
What this skill is
Prepositions are connecting words that show spatial, temporal, or logical relationships between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence (e.g., "the ball is UNDER the chair", "we left AFTER lunch"). Mastering prepositions expands descriptive sentence building, spatial reasoning, prepositional relationships, syntactic awareness, sentence expansion skills, and reading comprehension across narrative writing, directional reading, grammar drills, and social studies maps.
When children learn it
Physical spatial prepositions (in, on, under, by) are introduced in 1st grade and 2nd grade. In 3rd grade and 4th grade, lessons expand to abstract and temporal prepositions (during, through, without, beneath, among) across reading comprehension, descriptive writing workshops, grammar units, and sentence editing practice.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing spatial prepositions with similar meanings, writing 'on' when 'above' or 'over' is shown in a picture.
