About Question Words
What this skill is
Question words (interrogatives: who, what, where, when, why, how) are signal words used at the beginning of sentences to request specific types of information (who = person, where = place, when = time, why = reason). Mastering question words develops inquiry reasoning, reading comprehension, question sentence structure, interrogative syntax, oral communication, and textual analysis across reading comprehension, dialogue writing, research skills, and grammar lessons.
When children learn it
Oral question words (who, what, where) are introduced in kindergarten and 1st grade comprehension discussions. In 2nd grade, students master writing complete interrogative sentences using why and how, paired with question marks, across reading comprehension, story writing, research worksheets, and grammar units.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing 'where' and 'when', answering a place question with a time or a time question with a place on reading sheets.
- Omitting the question mark at the end of an interrogative sentence, ending question words with a period.
- Using 'why' when asking for a description of a process instead of using 'how' during sentence building.
