About Pronoun Review

What this skill is

Pronouns come in several types: personal (she, them), possessive (hers, their), reflexive (herself), indefinite (someone, everyone) and relative (who, which). Review sheets ask a child to tell them apart and use the right one. They also cover point of view: first person (I, we), second person (you) and third person (he, she, it, they).

When children learn it

This is 5th grade review work. It draws on Common Core L.1.1.d, L.2.1.c and L.4.1.a, the standards behind the earlier pronoun concepts. A child who worked through the topic in order will find the sheets familiar. Anyone else can use them to find which type still causes trouble.

Teaching Tips

  • Ask what the word is doing in the sentence, not what it looks like. "Whose" asking a question and "whose" joining two ideas are different jobs.
  • When rewriting a sentence from I to she, have your child circle every I, me, my and mine first, then change each one.

Common Mistakes

  • Calling every "whose" a possessive pronoun, when in a sentence like "the boy whose coat is yellow" it joins two ideas.
  • Using a personal pronoun where a reflexive one belongs, as in "He hurt him" for "He hurt himself."
  • Changing only one pronoun when rewriting from first person to third, so "I took my coat" becomes "She took my coat."
