What this skill is
Kakuro is a numerical crossword puzzle played on a grid of blank cells and clue triangles. Each clue number specifies the sum of digits in the adjacent horizontal or vertical run. Solvers fill blank cells with digits 1 through 9 such that no digit repeats within a single sum run. Kakuro challenges students to combine addition partition facts with grid elimination during independent practice and math club challenges.
When children learn it
Kakuro is introduced in 4th grade and 5th grade for students with strong single-digit addition fluency. Beginners solve small 3x3 grids with unique clue sums like 3 (1+2) or 4 (1+3).
