About Mathdoku

What this skill is

Mathdoku (also known as KenKen) requires filling an N x N grid with numbers 1 through N so no number repeats in any row or column, while caged groups of cells must produce a target number using a given operation (+, -, x, /).

When children learn it

3x3 addition-only grids are introduced in 2nd grade; 4x4 and 5x5 four-operation grids are mastered in 4th and 5th grade.

Teaching Tips

  • Fill in all single-cell cages first: these have no math operations and give immediate free numbers. Then find two-cell cages with strict pairs (like a 3+ cage in a 1-4 grid, which can only be 1 and 2).

Common Mistakes

  • Repeating digits within a row or column just to satisfy a cage operation.
  • Forgetting that single-cell "freebie" cages provide automatic numbers that should be filled first.
  • Overlooking division and subtraction order inside two-cell cages.
