About Mathdoku
What this skill is
Mathdoku is a grid-based puzzle that combines Sudoku elimination with arithmetic operations. In a 4x4 grid using digits 1 to 4, solvers fill rows and columns without repeating numbers while satisfying target cages like '6+' (digits adding to 6) or '3-' (digits subtracting to 3). Mathdoku builds mental math agility, factor awareness, and multi-step problem solving in elementary classrooms and math clubs.
When children learn it
Mathdoku is introduced in 2nd grade and 3rd grade with 3x3 and 4x4 addition-only grids. In 4th grade and 5th grade, students solve 5x5 and 6x6 grids incorporating addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Regular practice builds rapid calculation facts and flexible logic across subjects.
Common Mistakes
- Repeating a digit in the same row or column while trying to meet a cage target like '8+' (writing 4 + 4 in a straight row).
- Miscalculating operation targets, using digits 2 and 3 for a '6+' cage instead of numbers adding up to 6.
- Overlooking single-cell cages that show a target number like '3' with no operation sign, which takes that digit directly.
