About Codes and Ciphers

What this skill is

Cryptography explores historical and mathematical secret writing: substitution ciphers (shifting alphabet letters by a numerical key), symbol ciphers, and alphanumeric coordinate systems.

When children learn it

Number-to-letter codes are introduced in 2nd grade; historical shift ciphers and pigpen codes are decoded in 4th and 5th grade.

Teaching Tips

  • Make a cardboard Caesar cipher wheel: cut two concentric paper circles, write the alphabet around the perimeter of both, and pin them in the center with a brass fastener. Rotate the inner wheel three spaces to create a secret family spy code!

Common Mistakes

  • Shifting the Caesar key in the wrong alphabet direction (adding instead of subtracting shift numbers).
  • Miscounting dot and dash spaces when decoding Morse code letters.
  • Losing place when translating long encrypted letter strings.
