About Number Charts

What this skill is

A hundreds chart arranges numbers 1 to 100 in ten rows of ten, visually revealing place value patterns: moving horizontally changes ones by 1, while moving vertically changes tens by 10.

When children learn it

Using hundreds charts to count to 100 and 120 is a core 1st grade standard (CCSS 1.NBT.A.1) continued in 2nd grade mental math strategies.

Teaching Tips

  • Cut an L-shaped or cross-shaped window out of cardboard that reveals one center number and its four neighbors (+1, -1, +10, -10). Place it on a hundreds chart and let your child guess the hidden numbers before lifting the flap.

Common Mistakes

  • Moving horizontally when asked to add 10 rather than hopping down one row on the grid.
  • Struggling when jumping from the end of one row to the start of the next row (such as 29 to 30 or 30 to 31).
  • Confusing "ten more" (one row down) with "one more" (one box right).
