About Numbers on a Number Line
What this skill is
A number line shows numbers in order, evenly spaced along a line, so children can see how counting moves forward one step at a time and how each number relates to the ones before and after it.
When children learn it
Number lines to 20 are introduced in kindergarten, and number lines to 100 and missing-number practice follow in 1st and 2nd grade, aligned to K.CC.A.2 and 1.NBT.A.1.
Teaching Tips
- Point to each tick mark while counting out loud, one number per mark.
- Use a finger or counter to physically hop along the line from one number to the next.
Common Mistakes
- Counting the starting tick mark as the first step instead of the space moved.
