About Division Word Problems
What this skill is
Division word problems model situations where a total is split equally into containers, shared fairly among friends, or cut into equal lengths.
When children learn it
Solving division word problems within 100 begins in 3rd grade (CCSS 3.OA.A.3) and extends to multi-digit division scenarios in 4th and 5th grade.
Teaching Tips
- Ask: "Do we know the total at the start?". If the story gives you the big total and asks to split it up, you must divide. If you are trying to find the big total, you multiply.
Common Mistakes
- Reversing the order of division and dividing the smaller number by the larger number.
- Selecting multiplication because they saw words like "each" without noticing the total was already given.
- Misinterpreting what the quotient means in relation to the original question.
