About Long Division

What this skill is

Long division is a standard algorithm for dividing multi-digit numbers using a four-step repeating cycle: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, and Bring down (DMSB).

When children learn it

Multi-digit division with one-digit divisors is taught in 4th grade (CCSS 4.NBT.B.6). Two-digit divisors and decimal division are mastered in 5th grade (CCSS 5.NBT.B.6).

Teaching Tips

  • Use the family mnemonic: Does McDonald's Serve Burgers? (Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down). Have your child point to each step on a small index card as they work through the algorithm.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to bring down the next digit after subtracting.
  • Placing quotient digits over the wrong place value inside the division bracket.
  • Arithmetic errors during the subtraction step causing erroneous remainders.

  • How to Teach Long Division to Your Child

Teach long division as a loop of four small jobs that repeat: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. Once your child can say the loop out loud and knows the times tables, the rest is practice on printable long division worksheets, starting with one-digit divisors. Most children meet this in 4th grade, and it takes a few weeks of short, steady sessions to feel automatic.
