About Customary Units
What this skill is
The US Customary system is the traditional measurement framework used in the United States, based on units like 12 inches per foot, 3 feet per yard, 16 ounces per pound, and 4 quarts per gallon.
When children learn it
Customary measurement units are taught and converted across 2nd through 5th grade (CCSS 4.MD.A.1, 5.MD.A.1).
Teaching Tips
- Teach the rule: "Big to small, multiply them all! Small to big, divide like a pig!". When converting from large units (feet) to small units (inches), multiply (3 ft x 12 = 36 in).
Common Mistakes
- Confusing conversion factors across categories (using 12 instead of 16 for ounces in a pound).
- Dividing when they should multiply, or vice versa.
- Struggling with multi-step conversions like yards to inches.
