About Measurement Word Problems

What this skill is

Measurement word problems apply all four arithmetic operations to continuous physical quantities, requiring unit conversions, scale reading, and real-world reasoning.

When children learn it

Solving word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses, and money is a designated 4th grade standard (CCSS 4.MD.A.2).

Teaching Tips

  • Teach the "Same Name" rule: you cannot add numbers until they have the same unit name! If one is in feet and the other is in inches, convert feet to inches first (3 feet = 36 inches, then 36 + 6 = 42 inches).

Common Mistakes

  • Adding or subtracting numbers with different units without converting first (adding 3 feet and 6 inches as 9 feet).
  • Forgetting units in the final numerical answer.
  • Calculation slips when converting between larger and smaller units.
