About Measuring Length
What this skill is
Measuring length involves aligning a standard measuring tool (ruler, tape measure, yardstick) with an object to determine its linear dimension in standard units.
When children learn it
Measuring lengths to the nearest whole inch and centimeter is taught in 2nd grade (CCSS 2.MD.A.1). Measuring to half and quarter inches is mastered in 3rd grade (CCSS 3.MD.B.4).
Teaching Tips
- Highlight the zero mark on your child's ruler with a bright sharpie or sticker. Tell them: "Always line up the starting edge with the ZERO line, not the plastic edge of the ruler!".
Common Mistakes
- Aligning the object with the physical edge of the ruler rather than with the zero tick mark.
- Reading the nearest whole number without checking fractional half-inch or quarter-inch marks.
- Confusing the inch side of the ruler with the centimeter side.
