About Metric Units

What this skill is

The metric system is a decimal-based international measurement system where prefixes (milli-, centi-, kilo-) indicate powers of ten relative to base units (meter, liter, gram).

When children learn it

Introduced in 3rd grade and formalized with decimal conversions in 4th and 5th grade (CCSS 4.MD.A.1, 5.MD.A.1).

Teaching Tips

  • Use the prefix chant: "King Henry Died By Drinking Chocolate Milk" (Kilo, Hecto, Deka, Base, Deci, Centi, Milli). Point out that each step to the right moves the decimal one hop.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing prefixes, mixing up millimeter (1/1000) and centimeter (1/100).
  • Moving the decimal point the wrong direction when multiplying or dividing by 10, 100, or 1,000.
  • Forgetting that kilo- means one thousand.
