About Non-Standard Units

What this skill is

Non-standard measurement uses repeated identical everyday units (paperclips, cubes, handprints) laid end-to-end to express length before introducing standard rulers.

When children learn it

Expressing the length of an object as a whole number of length units laid end-to-end is taught in 1st grade (CCSS 1.MD.A.2).

Teaching Tips

  • Use a chain of plastic paperclips: snap them together tightly and show that they must touch end-to-end with no gaps and no overlapping. Measure toys, shoes, and book covers around the house.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving gaps between measurement units or overlapping units during measurement.
  • Mixing different sizes of units (like measuring with big and small paperclips together).
  • Not measuring in a straight line from end to end.
