About Counting Money

What this skill is

Counting money involves sorting coins from largest value to smallest, skip counting by 25s, 10s, 5s, and 1s, and adding dollar bill denominations.

When children learn it

Solving word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies is a 2nd grade standard (CCSS 2.MD.C.8).

Teaching Tips

  • Teach the "Line Up by Value" rule: always push quarters to the left, then dimes, then nickels, and pennies on the right. Write running totals underneath each coin as you count across.

Common Mistakes

  • Counting coins in random order rather than sorting from greatest value to least value.
  • Struggling to transition skip counting when switching coin types (e.g., jumping from quarters at 50¢ to dimes at 60¢).
  • Forgetting that four quarters make one dollar.
