About Multiplication Sentences
What this skill is
A multiplication sentence (such as 3 x 4 = 12) models repeated equal groups, expressing that 3 groups of 4 items combine to create 12 items in total.
When children learn it
Foundations of equal groups and arrays begin in 2nd grade (CCSS 2.OA.C.4). Writing formal multiplication equations is taught in 3rd grade (CCSS 3.OA.A.1).
Teaching Tips
- Use muffin tins or egg cartons: place 3 pom-poms in each of 4 cups. Say: "4 groups of 3 equals 12". Translating the word "of" into the "x" sign makes writing multiplication sentences natural.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing the number of groups with the size of each group in arrays.
- Adding the two numbers together instead of multiplying (writing 3 x 4 = 7).
- Confusing the multiplication symbol (x) with the addition sign (+).
