Teaching Tips
- Use the two-step formula: (1) multiply the front basic fact and write it down (for 60 x 70, write 42). (2) Count all the trailing zeros in both factors (two zeros) and attach them to make 4,200. This avoids the zero-slip error.
Common Mistakes
- Dropping a necessary zero when the base fact itself ends in zero (such as 4 x 50 = 200, where 4 x 5 = 20 already has a zero, writing 20 instead of 200).
- Adding too many zeros by miscounting zeros in both factors.
- Thinking the digits stay in place and zeros are just attached without understanding the place value shift.
