About Place Value to Millions
What this skill is
Large number place value organizes digits into three-digit periods (ones, thousands, millions), where each place represents ten times the value of the place to its right.
When children learn it
Recognizing that a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right across multi-digit whole numbers is a 4th and 5th grade standard (CCSS 4.NBT.A.1, 5.NBT.A.1).
Teaching Tips
- Use a place value chart with colored sections for the Millions, Thousands, and Ones periods. Point out that every single period has its own small team of Hundreds, Tens, and Ones.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing the ten-thousands and hundred-thousands places when writing numbers from dictation.
- Losing track of zeros in numbers with empty periods, such as writing five million six as 5,006.
- Failing to recognize that moving one place left multiplies a digit's value by ten.
