About Rounding
What this skill is
Rounding is replacing a number with an approximate value that is simpler to calculate with, based on which benchmark ten, hundred, or thousand the number is closer to on a number line.
When children learn it
Rounding two-digit and three-digit numbers to the nearest 10 and 100 begins in 3rd grade (CCSS 3.NBT.A.1) and extends to rounding multi-digit numbers to any place in 4th grade (CCSS 4.NBT.A.3).
Teaching Tips
- Use the "Roller Coaster Rule": circle the target place, underline the neighbor to the right. If the neighbor is 0-4, the car rolls backward (stays the same); if 5-9, it rolls over the hill (rounds up). All digits behind become zeros.
Common Mistakes
- Looking at the wrong digit, examining the rounding place itself rather than the neighbor digit to its right.
- Forgetting to change all digits to the right of the rounding place into zeros after rounding.
- Struggling with the benchmark midpoint rule (that 5 rounds up to the higher ten).
