About Rounding
What this skill is
Rounding replaces a number with a simpler nearby benchmark value. Students look at the target place value, check the neighbor digit to the right (5 or more rounds up, 4 or less rounds down).
When children learn it
Rounding is taught in 2nd through 5th grade, aligned to Common Core standards 3.NBT.A.1, 4.NBT.A.3, and 5.NBT.A.4.
Teaching Tips
- Underline the target rounding place and circle the neighbor digit to its right.
- Use number line benchmarks to see which benchmark ten or hundred is closer.
Common Mistakes
- Changing the neighbor digit instead of the target rounding digit.
- Rounding 5 down instead of up to the higher benchmark.
