About Text Features

What this skill is

Text features are visual design elements in nonfiction books that help readers locate and understand information quickly. They include headings, subheadings, photograph captions, bold vocabulary words, sidebars, tables of contents, and indexes.

When children learn it

Basic features like headings and captions are taught in 1st and 2nd grade. Using glossaries, indexes, and sidebars to conduct research is practiced in 3rd through 5th grade.

Teaching Tips

  • Take a "text feature walk" before reading: skim through the sheet to name all the headings, captions, and bold words first.
  • Ask target questions: "Which section heading would tell us what polar bears eat?"

Common Mistakes

  • Skipping photo captions and sidebars entirely and reading only the main body paragraphs.
  • Confusing a table of contents (front of book, chapter order) with an index (back of book, alphabetical topics).
