About Character Traits

What this skill is

Character traits describe a person's inner qualities and personality (like brave, selfish, curious, or honest), revealed through what they say, do, and think. They are distinct from physical feelings (tired, happy) or appearance (tall, brown hair).

When children learn it

Character trait identification starts in 2nd grade and deepens through 4th and 5th grade, where students compare how two characters respond to the same conflict.

Teaching Tips

  • Use the "trait versus feeling" rule: a feeling changes within twenty minutes, but a trait stays with the person across the whole story.
  • Ask for the proof line: "What did the character do that proved they were brave?"

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing a temporary emotion (like "mad" or "sad") with a permanent character trait (like "short-tempered" or "compassionate").
  • Describing physical looks instead of personality traits.
