About Point of View
What this skill is
Point of view identifies who is telling the story: first-person (character narrator using I, me, we) or third-person (outside narrator using he, she, they).
When children learn it
Point of view is taught in 2nd through 5th grade, aligned to RL.2.6, RL.3.6, and RL.4.6.
Teaching Tips
- Look at non-dialogue narrator pronouns to determine point of view.
- Identify whether the narrator is a character participating in story events.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing pronoun clues in dialogue quotes with the narrator point of view.
- Swapping 1st person and 3rd person definitions.
