About Point of View
What this skill is
Point of view refers to the narrator's vantage point in a story. In first-person point of view, a character inside the story tells it using pronouns like "I", "me", and "we". In third-person point of view, an outside narrator tells it using "he", "she", and "they".
When children learn it
Distinguishing first-person from third-person narration is introduced in 3rd grade and practiced through 5th grade, where students analyze how an author's perspective shapes events.
Teaching Tips
- Cover the quotation marks with your fingers and look only at the narrator text outside the quotes to spot pronouns.
- Ask who is holding the camera: is the storyteller inside the picture, or standing up above looking down on everyone?
Common Mistakes
- Looking at dialogue quotes instead of the narrator's voice (seeing "I want ice cream" inside quotation marks and wrongly calling a third-person story first-person).
- Overlooking how the narrator's feelings might slant the retelling of an event.
