About Fact and Fiction
What this skill is
Fact and fiction activities teach children to distinguish between real, factual information (nonfiction) and imaginative, pretend stories (fiction). Children examine details like talking animals, magic, and scientific facts to classify text.
When children learn it
Telling real from pretend is introduced in kindergarten and refined in 1st and 2nd grade as students begin reading both informational articles and chapter books.
Teaching Tips
- Ask the reality check question: "Could this really happen on our street, or did an author invent it?"
- Look for fantasy giveaways together, such as animals wearing clothes or cars flying.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming a story is factual because it takes place in a real city or features a realistic school setting.
- Thinking any story with animals must be fiction, even when reading factual animal articles.
