About Story Elements

What this skill is

Story elements are the core components that make up any fiction narrative: characters (who is in the story), setting (where and when it takes place), and plot (the beginning problem, middle events, and ending solution).

When children learn it

Children begin identifying characters and settings verbally in kindergarten. Writing simple beginning, middle, and ending summaries on graphic organizers is mastered in 1st and 2nd grade.

Teaching Tips

  • Use the "five-finger retell" hand motion: thumb for characters, index finger for setting, middle finger for beginning, ring finger for middle, and pinky for ending.
  • Pause mid-story and ask: "Where are they right now? How can we tell from the pictures and words?"

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing the setting (where the story happens) with the problem (what goes wrong).
  • Naming only the main character and overlooking supporting characters.
