About Blending and Segmenting
What this skill is
Blending combines individual spoken phonemes into whole words (/c/-/a/-/t/ -> cat). Segmenting breaks spoken words apart into constituent phoneme sounds.
When children learn it
Blending and segmenting is taught in prekindergarten and kindergarten, aligned to K.RF.2.B and K.RF.2.C.
Teaching Tips
- Keep consonant sounds clipped and clean (/k/ not /kuh/).
- Push felt counters into Elkonin sound boxes for each phoneme.
Common Mistakes
- Adding schwa sounds to consonants (/kuh/-/ah/-/tuh/).
- Skipping middle short vowel sounds during segmenting.
