About Blending and Segmenting
What this skill is
Blending is smoothing separate sounds together to make a word (hearing /c/ /a/ /t/ and saying "cat"). Segmenting is the reverse: hearing "cat" and breaking it into its three separate sounds /c/, /a/, and /t/. Blending prepares children to read words, while segmenting prepares them to spell.
When children learn it
Children practice oral blending and segmenting throughout kindergarten and 1st grade. Most start by blending two-sound words like "up", then move to three-sound CVC words before adding consonant blends.
Teaching Tips
- Use continuous blending without breaks. Sing the sounds together like a song (/m-a-t/) rather than choppy pauses (/m/ ... /a/ ... /t/).
- Use tokens or pennies to represent each sound. Have your child slide one coin forward for every sound they hear in the word.
Common Mistakes
- Pausing too long between sounds while blending, which causes the child to forget the first sound by the time they reach the last one.
- Omitting the middle vowel when breaking a word apart (segmenting "stop" as /s/ /t/ /p/).
